STEP 1
Try to locate the relevance of the editorial in the context of the Syllabus
For ex :- Place notes of editorials on AFSPA or Left Wing Extremism under the Internal Security topic
➢ This would ensure you stick solely to the syllabus
➢ Help in aggregating points from other editorials on the same topic
➢ Making connections between related topics would become easier
STEP 2
Read the article entirely first WITHOUT making any NOTES
➤ Take the time to ensure you understand every argument
➤ Use the internet or any reference book if necessary to look up background information
STEP 3
Now, close your eyes and reflect on the article for 5 – 10 minutes to assimilate the core idea behind the editorial
➤ Keep posing the question “WHY” as you recollect the arguments
➤ Doing this would increase memory retention and also make you understand the editorial at a deeper level
STEP 4
Run in your mind what possible questions UPSC could ask you on this topic
➤ Familiarity with previous year question papers would give you a sense of what kind of questions UPSC asks
➤ This would ensure your notes are almost like ready-made answers
STEP 5
Now make notes from the editorial as an ANSWER to those questions
➤ Make notes in ONLY your own words
➤ DO THIS Irrespective of how beautiful the sentences in the editorial are !
➤ Notes made in own words increases memory retention and revision speed
